What is NEST?

The national entrance exam, known as NEST, is to evaluate applicants’ aptitude, analytical abilities, and scientific temperament. It was started in 2007 with the intention of streamlining admissions into integrated M.Sc. programs that include general aptitude, physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics. The National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) is a compulsory test for students seeking admission to the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, and the University of Mumbai, Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CEBS), Mumbai. Both NISER and UM-DAE CEBS were set up by the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, in 2007.

Why you should prepare?

Gaining admission to esteemed programs at prominent scientific institutes is possible through NEST exam preparation. A NEST qualification gives you access to world-class education as well as a lively scientific community that promotes cooperation and intellectual development. Furthermore, NEST-affiliated institutions’ demanding curricula and research opportunities provide the groundwork for a fruitful and significant career in science. Studying for the NEST exam is essentially an investment in your future because it provides unmatched chances for both professional and personal growth in the field of scientific exploration.

Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates must meet each of the following three eligibility requirements:

  • Candidates will be considered for admission to the Integrated M.Sc. program of NISER/CEBS in 2024 if they have passed the 12th Standard examination or its equivalent in 2022, 2023 or if they plan to take the exam in 2024, regardless of age or category.
  • a minimum of 60% overall (or an equivalent grade) in the Class XII exam from any Indian board that is recognized. For candidates belonging to Scheduled Tribes (ST), Scheduled Castes (SC), and Divyangjan, the minimum requirement is 55%.
  • The candidate ought to be placed on the NEST 2024 merit list.

Exam Pattern:

Recently, there have been changes in the exam pattern. The following are some crucial NEST 2024 features:

  • A computer-based test (CBT/online exam) will be used for the NEST 2024 examination.
  • Each section will have a total of 20 questions. The multiple choice questions are single-option correct with the following marking scheme:
    • for a correct answer, you will be rewarded with +3 marks
    • for an incorrect answer, a -1 mark will be deducted
    • For unattempted questions, zero marks will be given.
  • It is in the interest of the candidate to attempt all sections. The merit list for both institutes will be prepared using the best three scores out of the four sections, and the

section with the worst score will not be considered. That is, scores out of 180 marks will be considered for preparing the merit list.

You have to keep in mind that the NEST exam is a prerequisite for admission to one of the best research institutes in India. Therefore, in order to get good grades, you need to work hard. To receive an excellent score, it is crucial to attempt every section. The top three qualifying scores from each of the four sections will be used to create the NEST 2024 merit list, and the lowest-scoring section will be eliminated. As a result, trying every section will raise your chances of receiving a higher overall score.
