Entrance Exams:

Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI)-

CMI conducts its own entrance exam. This year, the exam is scheduled on Sunday, 19 May, 2024. The application for the same will open in March and further details will be released by February.

The entrance exam is a 3-hour pen-paper based exam and English is the only medium. There are 16 questions containing both objective and subjective questions. The total marks is 100. There are two different parts in the paper and marks distribution is as follows:

Note that the students with exceptionally good performance in the National Olympiads in Mathematics and Physics conducted by HBSCE and the Indian Computing Olympiad conducted by IARCS are exempted from writing the BSc entrance examination.

Eligibility for CMI Entrance Exam-

There is just one eligibility criteria: a candidate must have successfully completed 10+2 years of Higher Secondary Education (or its equivalent) in order to be admitted to UG programmes.

Indian Statistical Institute (ISI)-

ISI also conducts its own exam. The exam pattern is given below:

  • The Exam is Offline and proceeds in 2 papers – UGA: Paper 1 and UGB: Paper 2.
  • UGA: Paper 1 has single correct questions. There is no negative marking in this section and for every unattempted question, a +1 mark is awarded. There are 30 questions in this section and +4 marks are awarded for every right answer. Therefore, a total of 120 marks comprise paper 1.
  • In order to proceed to Paper 2, a candidate must have the required cutoff marks in Paper 1. UGB: Paper 2 is a subjective paper. In total, there are 8 questions of 10 marks each. That is a total of 80 marks. This paper has stepwise marking.
  • Cut-off marks for PAPER 1, generally are
    • General – 50-55
    • OBC – 45-50
    • ST/SC/PWD – 40-45
  • Cut-off marks for PAPER 2, generally are 30-40 marks.

Eligibility Criteria-

A candidate must have successfully completed 10+2 years of Higher Secondary Education (or its equivalent), with Mathematics and English as compulsory subjects, in order to be admitted to UG programmes.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT):

IIT conducts two exams: JEE Mains and Advanced. The eligibility and exam pattern is listed below:

JEE Main 2024-

  • Eligibility-

      • Passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry (or Biology/Biotechnology) as compulsory subjects.
      • Secured at least 75% marks (65% for reserved categories) in Class 12 board exams OR be in the top 20 percentile of your board.
      • No age limit, but only three attempts allowed in consecutive years from appearing for Class 12.
  • Exam Pattern-

    • Two papers: Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) and Paper 2 (B.Arch & B.Planning).
    • Both papers were conducted online (except B.Arch drawing test, which is pen-and-paper).
    • Each paper has three sections:
      • Section A: 20 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) with one mark each, no negative marking.
      • Section B: 10 MCQs with five points each, negative marking applies.
      • Section B (Paper 1 only): 10 Numerical Value Answer (NVA) questions with five points each, negative marking applies. Candidates need to attempt only five of these questions.
    • Total marks: 300 for Paper 1 and 200 for Paper 2.
    • Exam duration: Three hours for each paper.

JEE Advanced 2024-

  • Eligibility-

      • Top 2.5 lakh candidates (including reserved categories) in JEE Main Paper 1 are eligible.
      • Must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry (or Biology/Biotechnology) as compulsory subjects.
      • Secured at least 75% marks (65% for reserved categories) in Class 12 board exams OR be in the top 20 percentile of your board.
      • Two attempts allowed in consecutive years from appearing for Class 12.
  • Exam Pattern-

    • Two papers: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
    • Paper duration: Three hours for each subject.
    • Question types: Primarily objective (MCQs and NVAs) with some subjective questions.
    • Total marks: 360 (120 marks for each subject).
