Are you ready to start a journey into science and discovery? Look no further than the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) Thiruvananthapuram, where academic excellence meets vibrant campus life. The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Thiruvananthapuram, established in 2008 by the Government of India, has emerged as one of the country’s premier scientific research and education institutions. It was set up to foster excellence in scientific research and education. This esteemed institution, in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerela, is recognized for its significant contribution to promoting basic science through innovative teaching and cutting-edge research. Today, let’s explore IISER Thiruvananthapuram, uncovering everything you need to know about admission procedures, available courses, fee structures, cutoff marks, and placement opportunities for 2024.
ADMISSION:
Earlier, admission to all the IISERs was based on IAT, KVPY and JEE channels. But KVPY and JEE advanced channels have been discontinued as a mode of admission. Hence, all the seats reserved for these channels are allotted to the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT).
What is the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT)? IISER conducts a rigorous entrance test called the IISER Aptitude Test or IAT. IISERs are dedicated to research, which requires students to possess conceptual clarity, problem-solving skills, and strong foundational knowledge, among other skills. Therefore, the IAT is designed to test students on these grounds. As a result, IAT has a different exam pattern from other national-level tests like JEE and NEET.
Important Information For IAT: The application process for IAT 2024 will be conducted from April 1 to May 13, with the exam scheduled for June 9, 2024. Candidates can apply on the official website (www.iiseradmission.in) after paying an application fee of INR 2000 (INR 1000 for reserved categories).

Number of Seats:
IISER Thiruvananthapuram offers 320 seats for the BS-MS dual degree program.
COURSES OFFERED:
The institute primarily offers integrated BS-MS (Bachelor of Science-Master of Science) dual-degree programs in various academic programs such as Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Earth and Environmental Sciences. Apart from this, IISER TVM also offers a unique i2 programme, which is not offered by any other IISER.
Structure of BS-MS Programme (Dual Degree):
- Core Semesters (First two years): Includes courses in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics.
- Majors (3rd and 4th Year): Specializations in various subjects.
- Research Year (5th Year): Focused research work.

i2 Programme:
IISER TVM offers a unique interdisciplinary programme called i2 programmes. The idea behind this programme is that the problems in today’s world can not be solved by biologists, chemists, physicists or mathematicians alone. Hence, through integrated and interdisciplinary programmes, education that combines the required skills from all the major disciplines is imparted to the students.
The structure of this programme is similar to the BS-MS Programme. It includes two-year-long foundation courses, followed by two years of advanced courses on a chosen discipline and a year-long research project.
Currently, this programme is available in five different disciplines – i2 in Biological Science combines Systems & Synthetic Biology, Precision Imaging & Medicine. i2 in the Chemical Science programme is offered under the thematic areas of chemical biology and biomaterials. The thematic area for the i2 programme in Data Science is called Data Science as applied to Natural Science. For mathematical science, i2 programmed combines Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computing. The last i2 programme, which is offered in the Physical Science discipline, is structured on the thematic areas of materials, devices, energy and Modelling.
