They offer integrated five-year degree programs (BS-MS) that combine undergraduate and postgraduate studies, fostering a multidisciplinary approach.

With a strong emphasis on research-oriented learning, state-of-the-art facilities, and interdisciplinary studies, IISERs aim to nurture students’ scientific curiosity and provide them with a solid foundation in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, and Earth Sciences. Along with the common mistakes that students make during counselling, we have organized a detailed guide to counselling.

Common Mistakes:

One of the most common mistakes students make is not paying the seat acceptance fees thinking they will lose money if no seat is allotted. But worry not, the extra amount that you have paid will be refunded later but if you do not get a seat then it is your responsibility IISER will say that you did not pay Seat Acceptance Fees (SAF),  we did not get any money we will not give you any IISER. So, make a note of it.

A lot of students will be making the mistake of not uploading the right documents, and a lot of you will forget and not check any updates from the IISER website. Which is a very harmful mistake and may result in missing important information. So please keep checking the official website and keep in touch with us for the latest updates.

Our initiative:

So, how can you complete the whole process of counselling without making mistakes? For all of you, we are going to do it totally for FREE in this SciAstra App! It will be very systematic and conduct a class for all of you to teach you step-by-step. SciAstra Tutor will accompany you and tell you about the whole procedure.

We have shared a very important document with all of you in the free material section of the SciAstra App. There we have shared the last year’s rank metrics that in every round what was the opening rank and what was the closing rank. Up to round six, the data have been uploaded in the free material section of the SciAstra App. Please check it out and see in each round what was the opening and closing ranks for each category general, SC, ST OBC and even for each IISER. The PDF can be accessed through the free material section for totally free on the SciAstra App.

Counselling Process:

Now, the counselling process is very simple. As you all have filled in your phone number and mail ID during the registration, applicants will get a notification after the first round, if any IISER is allotted in the first round. The first round result is going to be out on 12th July and from 4th July to 7th July you have to update the documents for each category and freeze the choice of the IISER. So, after the first round make sure to check the mail and sms, especially the spam folder in the mail. A lot of times the mail may find its way to spam.

Last year, a lot of students made this mistake and many parents told us that after watching our video they checked this spam folder and they found the mail. As a result, they could attend

the counselling otherwise they would have missed it. So, that is a very important thing go check this spam folder.

Then you will just login into the portal and will see which IISER you have been allotted you have to choose either the freeze option or float option.

Freeze, Float and SAF:

To explain freeze and float let’s say you preferred IISER Pune then Kolkata then Mohali like this in a preference. Let’s say in the first round you have got IISER Berhampur your seventh, last preference but you don’t want Berhampur you want IISER Pune as it was your preference. In the first round, you got Berhampur in upcoming rounds it might improve. so you don’t have to leave it you must choose freeze or float you have to choose one option.

Now, for choosing freeze or float, you have to do is pay the seat acceptance fee (SAF) and tell the IISER authority that yes you have paid the SAF which means that you want to get a seat in IISER. in this round, you got Berhampur but you want IISER Pune’s upper preference in the further rounds. Thus, choose the float option. The float option means I accept the seat but I want a better preference order in the next round of counselling that is float option.

The freeze option means a lot of students make this mistake if you want IISER Berahampur and you have got IISER Berhampur in that round and you are satisfied you don’t want any other IISER then you just select the freeze option pay the SAF and you will be done. So that means you already got the IISER.

Now, if you selected a float in this round. Let’s say you got IISER Mohali in the next round. Similarly, by opting for float you can improve your chances to get a seat and by the 8th-9th round, you may get a seat. You can opt for a freeze whenever you want to confirm your seat.

Float means your seat is confirmed. So in this round, you will be guaranteed to get a seat in IISER. In the next round if it improves, then you can opt for those seats. A very important thing to take note of is the whole point of paying seat acceptance fees which is about 17K for SC, ST and 35K for other categories is that if someone doesn’t select float/ freeze, doesn’t even log in. Then it is considered that you are not interested in taking admission to any IISER.

SAF related mistakes:

Secondly, students aim for top IISERs like Pune or Kolkata but they may get a seat only in Mohali until the last round. A common mistake they make is to leave their seat and think of preparing for next year.  But note that it is mentioned on the IISER website that if you reject a seat (that is paid SAF but didn’t take admission) you will not be eligible for IISER next year. If you are not willing to take admission to IISER please do not pay SAF and prepare for next year. So please see the predicted cut-off and decide accordingly.

Now, you don’t have to pay SAF in every round. If you don’t get IISER in 1st round but get it in later rounds you will have to pay the fees then. But only once. Another thing, let’s say your payment failed. Then contact the IISER authority for the help desk and make sure they didn’t receive any. Once it is confirmed, pay the SAF once again the deducted amount will return later. So, please remember it.
