Indian Institutes for Science Education and Research (IISERs) are among the main institutions of India dedicated to Science Education and Research. From 2024, the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT 2025) became the only admission exam for admission to the IISERs, eliminating the Kvpy and Jee Advanced channels.
It is expected that this major change significantly affects cutting trends for the IAT 2025 due to increased competition.
This blog is a detailed version of IAT’s expected cutting point.

Expected Cutoff for Different IISERs in 2025:
Precise cutting points can be a challenge, as IAT cutting varies based on several factors.
IISER Pune: This is one of the most sought after campuses. The 2023 cutoff for the first round of IISER Pune was around 175, closing in the 700s in the subsequent rounds. For 2025, students should target a score of over 160 in 240 to stay competitive.
IISER Kolkata: Known for their strong physics and chemistry departments, IISER Kolkata closed rank around 883 by 2023. Thus, students seeking Kolkata should consider a target score of about 130-140 to maintain a strong application.
IISER Bhopal and Mohali: With robust infrastructure and active research projects, these campuses are also highly competitive. In 2023, cutoff ranks were around the 430-440 mark. For 2025, students should seek scores between 120-130.
IISER Thiruvananthapuram (TVM): Focused on Interdisciplinary Sciences, IISER TVM cutoff in 2023 hovered around a rank of 430. For 2025, a score of over 120+ would be advisable for students interested in this campus.
IISER Tirupati and Berhampur: These newer campuses have slightly lower cutoff, making them accessible but competitive. A score of 110-120 should place students in a favorable position for these IISERs by 2025.
Expected for IISc and IIT Madras Cutoff:
Predicting the cutoff is a challenging task, especially with the dynamics of each year and the changes in the difficulty of the exam. However, based on previous data, a general trend arises. For IISC Bangalore, reaching a score of 215 or higher usually puts students in a competitive position. Last year, the closing classification of the General category was AIR 38.
Thus, students seeking IISC in 2025 should target a score between 210-220 to increase their chances. In addition, ensuring a classification of the first 20 in the general category further solidifies someone’s chances based on previous trends.
Analysis of 2023 IAT Cutoff Trends:
A detailed analysis: Have a look at the trend for IAT 2023 Cutoff.
IAT’s cutoff is influenced by several variables, including the difficulty of the exam, the number of candidates and the total number of available seats.
In 2023, the introduction of IISC Bangalore and IIT MADRAS into the IAT admissions increased the number of candidates, pushing the cutoffs higher.
For IISER aspirants, this means preparing diligently to meet or exceed these high benchmarks in 2025.
Increased competition: With the elimination of alternative admission routes such as KVPY and Jee, all IISER seats are now filled based on IAT scores. This change has increased competition among students who traditionally seek other exams.
IAT Exam Structure: IAT includes sections in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. Students are encouraged to try all sections, as jumping anyone can limit their punctuation potential, given the 240 test marks
