Marking Scheme :
Let’s start by discussing the changes made in the marking scheme this year.
The Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) conduct an aptitude test (IAT) annually to select eligible candidates for admission to their integrated five-year BS-MS program. In 2023, the IAT will consist of 240 marks, with 15 questions carrying four marks each in each of the four subjects. The marking scheme has been revised to include negative marking, with one mark being deducted for every incorrect answer.
- The exam pattern remains the same, with 15 questions in each subject, i.e., Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology, totaling 60. However, the marking scheme has undergone a change. Previously, each question carried three marks, but now, each question will be awarded four marks for a correct answer. On the other hand, for every incorrect answer, one mark will be deducted as a negative marking. If a candidate chooses not to attempt a question, he/she will be awarded zero marks.
- Revised Marking Scheme: The marking scheme for IAT 2023 has been revised to include negative marking. Earlier, the marking scheme awarded plus three marks for a correct answer and deducted 0.75 marks for an incorrect one, resulting in a percentage of 25%. The new marking scheme will award four marks for a correct answer and deduct one mark for an incorrect one, resulting in a negative marking percentage of 0.25%.
- Impact of Revised Marking Scheme: The revised marking scheme has caused some concerns among students, who worry that the paper might be more difficult as a result. However, this is not the case. The difficulty level of the paper will not change, and only the total number of marks in the IAT has been increased from 180 to 240 marks. The number of questions in each subject remains the same, and the percentage of negative marking is still only 0.25%.
In conclusion, the IISER APTITUDE TEST, IAT 2023 has undergone a few changes in its marking scheme, with the inclusion of negative marking.
However, students need not worry about the difficulty level of the paper, as it will remain the same. The total number of marks has been increased from 180 to 240 marks, with 15 questions carrying four marks each in each of the four subjects. Candidates should focus on their preparation and attempt the paper with a calm and focused mind without worrying about the marking scheme.
Compulsory subjects:
In order to apply for IAT 2023, there are a few important criteria that need to be met. Firstly, it is important to note that maths or biology is not compulsory to attempt the exam. However, in order to qualify for admission, candidates must obtain marks in the exam. It is recommended that candidates attempt as many sections as possible to increase their chances of success.
Besides, candidates must have at least 60 in their class 12th board examination. Additionally, their class 12th examination should either be in 2022 or 2023, which means only first droppers or students giving the 12th examination in 2023 can appear for IAT 2023 or apply for this. Furthermore, candidates must have a minimum of three science subjects out of physics, chemistry, maths, and biology. The minimum requirement is three subjects: physics, chemistry, maths, physics, chemistry, bio, or any other combination.
It is also essential to note that applicants must be Indian Nationals or PIO or OCI in order to apply through KVPY and IAT Channel. If a candidate is not an Indian national, PIO, or OCI, they can only apply through the Advanced Channel.

There are three admission channels to IISER: the IISER Aptitude Test, the KVPY Channel, and the Advanced Channel. The IISER Aptitude Test will happen on 17th of June, Saturday, 2023, at 9:00 AM all over India.
In the Advanced Channel, candidates do not need to give IAT exam. However, in all three channels, candidates can apply if they are eligible. For example, they can also give JEE Advanced examination, and if they are eligible, they can apply for multiple channels.
