Dr. Ramendra Mukherjee: The Indian Serial Inventor

Known as the “Indian Serial Inventor” with over 30 international patents. He has left an indelible mark on the world of innovation.

Dr. Ramendra Mukherjee’s groundbreaking ‘All-in-One Microscope,‘ capable of replacing the functions of various microscopes, exemplifies his unwavering dedication to scientific excellence and solving real-world challenges.

His journey of scientific innovation began at the tender age of four during a visit to his grandfather’s house. While napping one afternoon in a darkened room with closed doors and curtained windows, a streak of sunlight caught his attention.

Following that beam of light, he discovered that the wall in front of the door had transformed into a cinema screen, allowing him to observe the outside world.

In 1975, his most prolific invention, the ‘Micro Microscope,’ was born. It was a breakthrough that would earn him the ‘National Award’ from the Government of India in 2002 and global recognition from the ‘World Intellectual Property Organization’ in Geneva, Switzerland.

This invention, originating from a childhood fascination with lenses, marked the beginning of a remarkable journey in the field of microscopy.

The initial version of his microscope, fashioned from a 400-gram box of QT Talcum powder, wooden blocks, a switchboard, and household items, enabled him to observe the minute details of a mosquito’s blood cells.

Driven by his passion, he ventured to show his invention to his biology teacher, leading to its recognition as a compound microscope, even though Dr. Mukherjee had never seen a microscope before due to his schooling in a Bengali medium school.

Dr. Mukherjee’s research and tireless work on microscope modification and fabrication continued throughout his engineering studies and subsequent professional roles.

This pocket-sized microscope became accessible to students from the second grade and beyond, with about 50,000 units sold both in India and abroad

Parallel to his work on the microscope, Dr. Mukherjee delved into other instruments, including a portable ECG machine and, more recently, a smartphone-shaped ‘UV sterilizer’ designed to sanitize objects in seconds.

His relentless pursuit of innovation-indian serial inventor led him to claim that his ‘All-in-One Microscope’ could replace the functions of various microscopes, applying for a patent in 2010.

Dr. Mukherjee’s dedication extended beyond innovation; he designed a microscope to detect ‘microplastics’ in water for an Antarctic expedition, showcasing his commitment to solving real-world problems.

His lifetime of invention-indian serial inventor and unwavering determination culminated in the ‘All-in-One Microscope,’ a testament to his resilience and relentless pursuit of scientific excellence.
