The National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). NET is conducted semi-annually to determine whether two researchers are eligible for the Junior Research Fellow (JRF) bag. And the Chairman of the National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the CSIR NET exam in December 2025 as the service will evaluate a number of factors. To determine the eligibility criteria for CSIR NET 2025, one of these factors is nationality. Proof that one is required to be an Indian citizen to register in CSIR NET.

CSIR NET 2025 Eligibility Criteria 

NTA officially revealed the CSIR NET 2025 eligibility criteria in the CSIR NET 2025 Notification on December 9, 2025 for the December session. Applicants who wish to become an assistant professor or receive a scholarship must meet certain criteria. Failure to meet the CSIR NET 2025 eligibility criteria will result in your registration being rejected.

CSIR NET Educational Qualification 2025

  • Applicants for EWS General/Non-Reserved/General Must have obtained at least 55% marks (no allocation) in Master’s degree or equivalent qualification from a recognized university/institution. Candidates in the category OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PcD/Third Gender must have 50% marks (no rounding) to be eligible to sit the exam.
  • Applicants who are pursuing a master’s degree or are awaiting final year results can register in the Awaited Results (RA) category. However, you must have concluded or mastered within two years to count towards the NET results with the required marks. For those who are certified or have a Ph.D. Hardly accept it at all. The deadline is one year to meet the eligibility criteria.
  • Applicants with a Ph.D (Students who graduated before September 19, 1991 will receive 5% (from 55% to 50%) marks for appearing in NET.) 
  • Applicants who have completed a four-year bachelor’s degree and scored at least 75% or equivalent grades are eligible for the JRF award and admission to the doctoral program. The program provides 5% flexibility for applicants. SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PcD Applicants who are not in the final semester/year of a four-year bachelor’s degree program may register temporarily. Eligibility requirements for JRF/Ph.D. must be met. Admission has no deadline or NET results.
  •  Eligibility: Any CSIR NET course can be chosen by the applicants who have completed a  four-year bachelor’s degree irrespective of the program completed. 
  •  Applicants holding a foreign diploma/diploma  must ensure that their academic qualification is equivalent to Indian master’s degree. It is approved by the Association  of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi. 
  •  Applicants are not required to produce certificates/records  or publications to NTA but such certificates/records or publications may lead to disqualification of the applicant  at any stage. This will lead to the cancellation of his application and may also involve legal  actions.

CSIR NET Educational Qualification Subject Wise:

Subject like in Life Science, Chemical Science, Earth Science (Sciences/Geology/Geophysics/Atmospheric Sciences/Ocean Sciences or related subject ), Physical science, Mathematical science (Mathematics/Statistics or related subject with Mathematics/Statistics as one of the main subjects,) needs students needs to have a  M.Sc. or equivalent degree in (either of the subjects of their respective field) with a  minimum of 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC candidates)  OR, B.Tech in Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Engineering with minimum 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC candidates).

Applicants in the third gender category have the same flexibility in tax, admission and eligibility criteria for NET (or possibly JRF and Assistant Professor) as they enjoy in the SC/ST category.

CSIR NET Eligibility 2025 Number of Attempts

Candidates can appear for the CSIR NET exam multiple times, as there is no limit on the number of attempts, provided they meet the eligibility criteria. The CSIR NET exam is conducted twice a year, typically in June and December.
