Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Just like humans and animals, machines also possess intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been named a vital driver of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We experience AI in our homes, our cars, our businesses, and even in public spaces. ChatGPT by OpenAI has become a sensation recently. Machine learning enables an AI system to learn from data. Working in AI and machine learning means developing new ways to use technology. AI technologies are made to make machines act as if they are smart and to give them the ability to understand, reason, and learn from data. This is typically done through algorithms, rules, or instructions that guide the machine’s behaviour. There are many approaches to AI, including machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics. These technologies are used for a wide range of things, like self-driving cars, virtual assistants, and diagnosing and treating medical conditions.

Courses in AI after XII

Our system is still in its infancy in AI education. This is because India only offers a few undergraduate courses, specifically about artificial intelligence. The majority of the courses are for graduate students. For instance, a program for a B.Tech. in computer science already covers subjects like AI, machine learning, data analytics, etc. A graduate with a B.Tech. in Computer Science may pursue postgraduate programs (like an M.Tech., PG Diploma, or PG Certification) that deal with AI. Other relevant courses for the UG level are:

  • B.Tech. in Computer Science
  • B.Tech. in Robotics and Automation
  • B.Tech. in Electronics Engineering
  • B.Tech. in EC Engineering
  • B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering

You can pursue a B.Tech. from almost any engineering college in India. IITs, NITs, and IIITs are renowned for B.Tech. programs in Computer Science. Some private universities like Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) and Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) provide excellent opportunities in Computer Science for undergraduates.

The second way is to pursue a B.Tech. in AI, which is the only undergraduate course being provided in India at the UG level. IIT-Hyderabad is the only IIT to provide a complete, 4-year bachelor’s program dedicated to AI. IIT-Kharagpur provides only a 6-month course on AI. Other institutes include Chandigarh University, Jain University, and Sharda University. Admission to IIT-Hyderabad is made through JEE Advanced, while other institutes have their admission criteria, usually based on Class XII merit. The fee is generally around Rs. 100,000 annually for IIT-H, while higher for different institutes.

Courses in AI after your Undergraduate

After completing an AI-specific or AI-relevant UG-level program, you may apply for PG admission. When it comes to PG education, there are numerous AI-specific programs. You can also opt for a diploma with a higher level of specialisation than a master’s. Some of the programs are listed below:

  • M.Tech. AI and Robotics
  • M.Tech. Computer Science Engineering (focus on AI)
  • M.Tech. AI and ML
  • PG Diploma courses in AI, Data Science and ML
  • Advanced Certification in AI

Many institutions in India offer these programs. Some of the top institutes include:

  • Indian Institute of Technology (IITs):

Various IITs across the country offer M.Tech. in AI and related fields. You must clear the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) exam to get into the IITs for masters.

  • Indian Institute of Science (IISc):

IISc Bangalore is a premier institute that offers an M.Tech. in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
