This is the story of an unsung hero, a visionary whose dedication and innovation have not only breathed new life into farming but have also lit the way for countless others.
In the span of a few years, what started as a modest 500-square-foot experiment on their ancestral land would evolve into a breathtaking transformation. Today, their farm yields a staggering 500 kilos of green fodder daily, nurturing a thriving community of 105 cows and goats.
@Ashwin Sawant ventured into uncharted territory, driven by a passion for agriculture and a vision to revolutionize traditional farming practices.
In the rustic village of Hapus Baug, nestled within the Junnar tehsil of Pune, Maharashtra, Ashwin’s story took root. Born into a family that owned a modest 2 acres of land, he embarked on an extraordinary journey fueled by determination and innovation.
His experimentation with hydroponics, an unconventional technique that cultivates crops without soil, began on a mere 500 square feet of land. In this method, plants receive essential nutrients directly from enriched water, sparing them the energy-consuming search for nutrition.
Today, Ashwin’s once-modest plot yields a bountiful harvest of 500 kilos of green fodder daily, sustaining a thriving community of 105 cows and goats on his farm.
But he didn’t stop there. Fueled by a desire to share the benefits of hydroponics with fellow farmers, he established ‘Scientific Hydroponics,’ a research lab aimed at introducing this groundbreaking farming technique to the wider agricultural community.
This hydroponic method allowed farmers to produce one kilo of green fodder using just 1.5 liters of water, preserving an astounding 99 percent of water compared to conventional methods.
Ashwin’s journey was marked by countless trials and errors, but his relentless spirit ultimately bore fruit. He devised a cost-effective model, with an average price tag of Rs 3 lakh, which could be replicated and scaled across different regions of the country.
To regulate temperature, Ashwin ingeniously substituted expensive air conditioners with his ‘fan-and-pad’ cooling system.
This innovation harnessed exhaust fans to draw air through cooling pads, using evaporated water to cool the surroundings effectively.
He empowered over 8,000 farmers and aspiring entrepreneurs with the knowledge and skills to embrace hydroponic farming.
Ashwin’s life story embodies the triumph of perseverance, innovation, and a deep-rooted commitment to transforming the agricultural landscape of India.
