Is Computer Science or Data Science available at any IISER?

IISERs are famous for their education and research in basic sciences. But do you know that IISER also specialise in computer science and data science? Well, not all IISERs, but a few of them provide good opportunities to explore these fields along with the other basic science fields. So, if you are looking for the IISERs that provide courses in computer and data sciences, this blog is just for you.

In this blog, we will discuss:

Do IISERs have computer science and data science?

IISERs usually provide physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology and earth sciences courses. Computer science and data science are the courses that students prefer going to IITs and NITs for. However, a few IISERs provide some courses in these fields and develop an interdisciplinary environment among the students. IISER Bhopal is popular for providing many engineering courses along with research ones. It provides both computer science and data science. IISER Kolkata and Pune have data sciences departments on their campuses, thus providing exposure to these fields.

It should be noted that you can’t get your BSMS degree in these fields except at IISER Bhopal. You need to enrol in the BS program in DSE (Data Science Engineering), which is a 4-year program. If you want to know what career options you have in the field of computer science, check out this blog.

Top IISERs for Data Science:

IISER Bhopal-

IISER Bhopal provides a four-year BS degree in DSE (Data Science Engineering). The DSE BS programme is highly interdisciplinary and provides exposure to students to handle data and have a rigorous understanding of different tools and techniques to perform analytics on the data the most focal point is that the program offers domain knowledge in natural science, economic sciences and engineering sciences.

The DSE follows a common curriculum for the first year of the programme. In the 2nd year (pre-major) curriculum, compulsory courses (9/10 credits) in each semester offered from various departments must be taken. The Mathematics, Economic Sciences, and EECS departments offer these courses. Based on their academic record and interest, students can opt for a DSE Major at the end of 2nd year. Students from natural, economic, and engineering sciences can apply for the DSE program. However, the prospective students must ensure that the pre-major compulsory courses for the DSE Major are taken in the 2nd year.

The 3rd and 4th years will cover foundational and advanced courses with computational components to give students sufficient practical implementation and programming experience. The DSE program students need to take 64 credits of courses, of which 32 credits must be from DSE courses. The students need to take 18 credits of project work. For a minor in DSE, a student must take 18 credits in DSE courses.

IISER Kolkata-

The Department of Computational and Data Sciences at IISER Kolkata, established in 2019, offers education and research opportunities in various cutting-edge fields, including Information Retrieval (IR), Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning (ML), and Data Mining. With esteemed faculty specialising in these areas, the department fosters innovation and excellence. It provides Ph.D. and integrated Ph.D. programs, creating a vibrant student learning environment.

IISER Pune-

The department provides education in three foundations of data science: (i) statistics and probability, (ii) applied mathematics, and (iii) computer science. Like IISER Kolkata, it provides only PhD in Data Science, and undergraduate education hasn’t started yet. However, BSMS students can participate in the semester projects in this field. This may be in the form of a reading, literature review, theoretical or computational project.

Top IISERs for Computer Science:

If you are interested in computer science, IISER Bhopal is the best IISER among all the others. Only IISER Bhopal has an EECS (Electrical Engg & Computer Science) department, where you can get a 4-year BS or a 5-year BS-MS (Dual Degree).

The Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (EECS) was started at IISER Bhopal in 2015 to promote interdisciplinary research and education between basic sciences and engineering. The four-year BS program in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is unique in that it exposes you to basic electrical engineering and computer science concepts, allowing both academic and industrial careers. You can get a BS degree after four years, and if you want to continue for one more year, you can get a BS-MS dual degree. You need to devote one year to a research project and to making an MS thesis.

Computer Science departments are present in other IISERs but don’t provide a degree in it. For example, you can have computer science as your minor in the third year but can’t major in it.
