What after JEE?

Imagine you have cleared the JEE exam but are unsure what to do next. Should you sit for alternative examinations like IAT or NEST or prepare for the JEE Advanced to get into the IITs? It is like not knowing which mountain to climb first, standing at the foot of many others. At this stage, many institutions and courses are available, each providing a unique experience. If you are one such student and want to investigate the intriguing options ahead of you after clearing JEE, this blog is for you.

In this blog, we will discuss

  • What is JEE Mains and JEE Advanced
  • Should you sit for JEE Advanced?
  • What other options are available?
  • FAQs

What is JEE Mains and JEE Advanced:

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is India’s national-level engineering entrance exam. It is the gateway for admission to undergraduate engineering programs at prestigious institutions nationwide. JEE comprises two main exams: JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. JEE Main is the first examination stage conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). JEE Advanced is the second stage of the examination and is performed by one of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on behalf of the Joint Admission Board (JAB).

To appear in JEE Advanced, a student must be eligible to pass JEE Main and meet specific requirements. Both JEE Main and JEE Advanced are highly competitive exams that test candidates’ knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and analytical skills. Scoring well in these exams opens doors to prestigious engineering colleges and paves the way for a promising career in engineering and technology.

Should you sit for JEE Advanced?

After qualifying JEE Mains, it is an excellent option to sit for JEE Advanced. If you have been preparing for JEE Advanced, you must definitely sit for the exam as it will open your doors to IITs, IISc, and IIST. You can also utilise your preparation in exams like IAT and NEST, which are more difficult than JEE Mains.

What other options are available?

B.Tech and M.Tech:

The Bachelor of Technology program is the most sought-after course among JEE Advanced qualifiers. Computer Science and Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Chemical, Aerospace, and other engineering specialisations are among the many engineering specialisations it offers. B.Tech. Programs are available at prestigious universities across the nation, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other esteemed colleges like IIST.

Students can pursue a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in the same field through dual degree programs. These five-year integrated programs provide a comprehensive educational experience. Students who have a master’s degree as their ultimate goal should enrol in this program. Specialisation options for students include B.Tech. + M.Tech. (Electrical Engineering), B.Tech. + M.Tech. (Mechanical Engineering), and B.Tech. + M.Tech. (Computer Science and Engineering), among others. These extensive programs are offered by the IITs and a few other institutions. This program is not the best choice for students who are more concerned with finding jobs just after graduation.

Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch.):

If you have a flair for creativity and a passion for aesthetics, consider pursuing courses in design or architecture. Institutes like IITs, National Institutes of Technology (NITs), the National Institute of Design (NID), the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), and other reputed design schools offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in disciplines such as industrial design, fashion design, architecture, and urban planning.

Integrated Dual Degree Programs:

Numerous institutions provide integrated programs that combine undergraduate and graduate coursework. Integrated BS and MS; integrated PhD (MS+PhD) programs are among these offerings. They allow students to pursue postgraduate work and research in specialised fields after their undergraduate studies. IISc, IISERs, NISER, CEBS, CMI, ISI, and a few IITs offer these integrated programs in physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, earth sciences and other scientific fields. Check out our other blogs to learn more about the admission procedure to these institutes.

One such course is the four-year BS course that IIT Madras offers. To get information about the IIT Madras BS program, you can check out this blog.

Getting Admission to Private Engineering College:

Look into private engineering colleges that suit your preferences after passing the JEE. Examine the eligibility requirements and take part in the counselling process. Send in the necessary paperwork and wait for the seat assignment results. Some prestigious private colleges in India are the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), etc.

Other Allied Courses:

JEE qualifiers can look into allied courses that fit their interests and career goals besides conventional engineering and science programs. These cover a variety of subjects, such as economics, law, humanities, management, and design. Interdisciplinary institutions such as IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other reputable universities offer such programs. As an example, the B.Tech. + LL.B. (Hons.) program at IIT Kharagpur is a five-year integrated program that combines engineering and law.  The B.Tech. + the M.A. (Hons.) program at IIT Madras is a five-year integrated program that blends engineering and humanities. The program offers the chance to focus on subjects like English studies, development studies, and economics.
